SUPER HAIR REMOVAL

SHR (Super Hair Removal) is a technology that combines laser hair removal and SHR. This technology represents a breakthrough in permanent hair reduction with light technology. The treatment is more pleasant than with conventional systems and your skin is better protected. The treatment is virtually pain-free.

Let’s face it, excess body and facial hair can be unsightly and embarrassing. Shaving, waxing, plucking and depilatory creams are inconvenient, time consuming, painful, messy and temporary at best.

At Lavish we use Super Intense Pulsed Light (SIPL), the most advanced pulsed light technology to provide safe and effective permanent hair reduction treatments customised for each individuals hair, skin colour and sensitivity.

  • WHAT IS SUPER INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (SIPL)?

Super Intense Pulsed Light (SIPL) technology is FDA approved for Permanent Hair Reduction and based on years of scientific research, supersedes all other hair reduction systems for efficiency and safety. SIPL utilises patented smooth pulse technology and client contact cooling (no gel required) to provide the safest form of pulsed light hair reduction treatments available today.

HOW DOES SUPER INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (SIPL) REMOVE UNWANTED HAIR?

Super Intense Pulsed Light works by passing light energy over the surface of the skin in the area of unwanted hair growth. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin pigment within the hair. The energy that is absorbed is converted into heat and destroys the hair stem cells that are responsible for the growth of the unwanted hair. The absorption of light and conversion to heat causes permanent damage to the hair and surrounding structures. This process is called photothermolysis.

IS IT SAFE?

Our SIPL system was specifically designed with client comfort, care and safety in mind. Our system has an inbuilt client cooling system that chills your skin before, during and after each treatment. The inbuilt cooling minimises client discomfort, increases the efficiency of the results but most importantly increases the safety of the treatment significantly reducing the risk of burning and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

HOW ARE SIPL TREATMENTS DIFFERENT TO LASER?

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar. Recent clinical studies have shown than when compared to Lasers, SIPL treatments are not only less painful for the client but also faster due to the large treatment window. A man’s back can be treated in less than 30 mins!

ARE SIPL TREATMENTS PAINFUL?

SIPL treatments are significantly less painful than laser treatments and some say much less painful than waxing! Depending on your skin and hair colour and setting of the machine, most clients will feel a mild flicking sensation and some warmth lasting 2-24 hours.

WHAT BODY AREAS CAN I GET TREATED?

Any area such as the upper lip, chin, face, neck, underarms, arms, bikini, Brazilian, legs, chest and back can all be treated, with around the eyes being the exception as SIPL is not accurate enough to shape the brows. Excellent results are obtained in both men and women. Pulsed light systems only treat hair with visible pigment and cannot treat fine, blond or white/grey hairs.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SIPL TREATMENT?

At the beginning of your course of treatments you will have a thorough consultation with your therapist. You will be required to complete a consultation form to determine your hair and skin colour, recent methods of treating the unwanted hair, how your skin responds to the sun and some basic medical questions. Your therapist will then look at the area to be treated to determine a treatment plan and perform three test patches to see how your skin responds to the light. Your first permanent hair reduction treatment can be performed 30 minutes after your initial test patch and consultation.

In your first treatment your therapist will shave the hair in the area to be treated. Unlike waxing or electrolysis, no visible hair is to be on the surface of the skin. Your therapist will then move the SIPL hand piece over the area of your skin being treated, pulsing the light at the same time. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone and a mild warming sensation will tell you when the light is being pulsed.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?

Immediately after the treatment you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, sometimes accompanied with some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours and can be soothed with ice packs and after sun care lotion. The treated hair will continue to appear for 7-30 days post treatment. This is NOT new hair growth but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR TREATMENTS?

One month before your first treatment and during your course of treatments you MUST stop waxing, plucking, tweezing, electrolysis, bleaching or using depilatory creams on the area. You may only shave or cut the unwanted hair.

You must also keep the treated area out of any sun exposure. Protect skin by using a broad spectrum sunscreen. You must also stop using solariums and any form of fake tanning products. Treatments may not be performed on tanned skins, including fake tans as it reduces the effectiveness of the treatment and exposes the client to a greater risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

In between treatments we recommend that you moisturise the treated area on a daily basis and exfoliate regularly to optimally prepare your skin for SIPL treatments.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

You will need a minimum of 6 treatments in the area of unwanted hair growth to achieve permanent results. Depending on the colour and area of hair growth a second course of treatments may be required. Following your initial course ongoing maintenance will be required every 6-12 months to treat any new growth that may be stimulated.

HOW LONG WILL THE TREATMENT TAKE?

Treatments take anywhere from 15-60mins depending on the area of the body being treated and clients can return to work immediately.

WHY DO I NEED A MINIMUM NUMBER OF TREATMENTS?

Each individual hair has a growth cycle consisting of three stages, a growing, resting and dying stage. Only hairs in the actively growing stages can be successfully treated by the pulsed light. Depending on the area treated, only 20-30% of hairs will be in this stage at any one time. Hairs on average take one month to complete this growth cycle. To effectively treat ALL hairs and achieve permanent results, all hairs must be treated within this growing stage with treatments performed every month for a minimum of 6 treatments.

IS IT PERMANENT?

Yes, the results are permanent! Once a hair follicle has been successfully treated, it will never return. Recent clinical studies show that 85% of clients treated with SIPL achieve 80% reduction in unwanted hair growth or more! With this being said, some client’s find they need maintenance treatments performed every 6 – 12 months should any hair be coming through. Unfortunately the body can stimulate new hair to grow due to hormonal changes, environmental changes, medical conditions and medications thus individual maintenance treatments are required to treat any new growth that may come through.

IS PERMANENT HAIR REDUCTION THE ONLY BENEFIT?

No! Whilst permanent hair reduction is the most desired result, hair in the treated area also grows back finer, lighter and softer during the course of the treatments and hair growth rate is significantly reduced. SIPL treatments also treat ingrown hairs!!

SIPL treatments put a permanent end to unwanted hair, with a quick and painless treatment procedure.

If you are interested in treating unwanted hair, then you’ve come to the right place

At Lavish Skin Therapy Clinic we do not treat clients who may be trying to conceive, are pregnant or breastfeeding. Laser hair removal has not been proven to be damaging to pregnant or lactating mothers or their children, however we recommend delaying treatment during these periods.

Depending on the skin type, thickness of the hair and colour, also which part of the body is being treated will depend on how many treatments you will need, we recommend between 6-12 treatments every 4-8 weeks, although some people require more than others. We invite you to visit us for a complimentary consultation and we can discuss exactly what we recommend for you and how long each treatment will take.

Every Laser Hair Removal treatment, like every person, is unique. Individual treatments will vary according to skin and hair colour, the lighter your skin and the darker your hair, the better the results achieved. Laser permanently removes hair in follicles during the Growth (Anagen) phase. At any time about 85% of our hair is in the growth stage and will be removed by Laser. During this stage the hair is most receptive to Laser as it is rich in protein, keratinized cells and melanin.

The amount of time the hair follicle stays in the Anagen phase is determined by your genetic make-up. A hair’s Anagen phase may last for several years, with Anagen hairs representing about 85% of our hair. At the conclusion of the Anagen phase the follicle enters the Catagen or transition phase and then the Telogen or resting phase when the hair begins to shed while the follicle is stimulated to begin a new cycle. Hair is not susceptible to Laser Hair Removal treatment during the Transition and resting phases.

The duration of these phases varies from person to person and is affected by our basic genetic (DNA) make-up, age, health and gender. Different hair colour and follicle shape also affects the timings of these phases. As hair follicles move back to the Growth phase they become susceptible to laser hair removal treatment and can then be removed permanently, this requires follow up visits. Maintenance visits are required to remove hair from new follicles that develop and start to grow hair. This is why we recommend 1 to 3 Maintenance visits each year.

Laser Hair Removal treatment is more effective with thick dark hair than it is with thin light hair. If you have natural dark hair and dark skin you can still be benefit from laser treatment for hair removal, however additional treatments are usually required to achieve satisfactory results.

You can expect to be greeted warmly and made comfortable. All treatments are performed in our air-conditioned treatment rooms, allowing you to privately prepare yourself for your treatment. Personal care items are provided for your comfort. We understand the need for your discretion. You and your Laser Clinician will wear safety glasses to protect your eyes during your visit with us.

Your therapist will use a small hand piece that touches your skin to deliver the pulse. You may feel a light spray of coolant on your skin before each laser pulse.

We advise you use Aloe Gel for 2-3 days after all treatments, we will apply the laser aid for you after your treatments in the clinic.

Typically, small areas of the body take about 15 minutes, In your initial consultation we will go through how long each treatment will take, as well as assessing your skin, hair colour and advising you if laser is the best option for you, We will discuss your needs and expectations before commencing treatment. Every Client is unique and will vary in the amount of treatments they will need, we will tailor make a program which best suits you, to ensure you receive maximum results.

Lasers work by delivering an intense beam of light that is absorbed by the skin. This light is converted to heat and is absorbed by the cells being targeted safely destroying the hair follicle, while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected.

You must not fake tan or have had sun exposure on the area being treated 4 weeks before having Laser hair removal. Please ensure you wear sunblock regardless of what you are doing during the day. Do not wax or pluck the hairs being treated for up to four weeks before treatments.

Please shave the area 1-2days before having laser hair removal treatments. Shaving the area will ensure maximum results.

  • Avoid sun exposure after the treatment
  • Keep the treated area out of the sun for 4 weeks before and after each Laser Treatments.
  • Your hair can take up to 7-14 days to grow and drop out.
  • Do not wax or pluck the hairs in between treatments.

Laser hair removal treatments are not effective on Blonde, Red or Grey hair.

Laser Hair Removal is the best way to cure and prevent in-grown hairs.

Please ensure to remove all makeup prior to your treatment.

Some clients can encounter a skin condition called Folliculitis (from such treatments as waxing, plucking, tweezing, or close shaving) which is a skin condition where the hair follicles are inflamed. Results of this condition include, tender red spot, surface pimples, when using the hair removal, this will aid in the healing process and destroy harmful bacteria in the hair follicle to avoid further outbreak.  It is also common practice for doctors to recommend laser treatments. Currently it is the safest and most effective medical treatment for ingrown hairs.

Laser hair removal destroys the hair at the root, after your course of treatments, which will depend on your skin and hair colour (We generally advise anywhere from 6-12 treatments), your skin will be left with eliminated hair growth in the areas treated, no scarring or ingrown, It seems like a long process, but it is worth the end result.

Most people ask the question, what is the difference between SHR and Laser? SHR and Laser are very different treatments and you the consumer, needs to know exactly what you are paying for. It is important to ensure you know what machine is being used for your treatments and to research the pros and cons of these machines. You will find that many companies throughout Australia claim to use “SHR Laser Hair Removal”. This is not genuine Laser Hair Removal and should not be treated or charged as such.

WHAT IS SHR?

SHR (Intense Pulsed Light) is available in many different versions including SHR, SPL, VPL, or CPL. The majority of people do not realise that there are significant differences between SHR and Laser and that there are inherent risks and side effects associated with SHR hair removal.

HOW DOES SHR WORK?

An Intense Pulsed Light machine uses a broad spectrum of light, sending out a variety of wavelengths of energy to destroy the hair follicle. This can result in the body receiving unneeded wavelengths of energy that can affect and damage multSHRe structures below the dermis. SHR cannot effectively isolate the specific wavelength that is only needed to destroy the hair and thus leaves a greater margin for error. SHR machines do not have the ability to use “selective photothermolysis”, which is the rapid heating of a select structure and not the surrounding areas. If not used by a highly skilled technician, SHR can cause burning and scarring of the skin. It is also unknown what the long term effects may result from SHR on the body due to the higher levels of exposure of radiation.

SO HOW DOES LASER WORK COMPARED TO SHR?

The laser used at Lavish we use an FDA approved  SIHR Mach and a proven leader in the hair removal industry.

The laser operates by producing a single wavelength that is specifically relative to the hair follicle. By doing this, it can precisely and consistently attack the exact region that it is targeting, the hair follicle.

How does this laser get to the follicle to destroy it?

The laser uses a beam of light which penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the pigment colour in the hair where it is converted to heat.

This heat travels down the hair shaft to the hair root and destroys it so that further hair cannot grow.

Because hair has different growth phases and the treatment only works in the active growth phase, several treatments are necessary to achieve a lasting result.

The number of treatments required will depend upon the hair density, colour, skin type and treatment area, together with ethnic background and hormones.

Typically, 6 to 8 treatments are required

As these are single frequency wavelength lasers, never at any stage does the laser penetrate the dermis or second layer of skin, making this completely safe and accurate. The body is also not exposed to any other wavelengths that are not needed for the hair removal process.

It is estimated that approximately 80-90% permanent hair reduction will be achieved from a course of 6-8 treatments.

Note that this rate of effectiveness does not refer to results after a single session. This success rate can only be achieved after the required number of laser hair treatment sessions.
